Chapter Twenty-Five: Andrex

The Storms Brew

Vast blue ocean stretched out before my eyes as far as I could see. Glinting and sparkling in the golden sunlight of Earth, the white caps swished against the hull of the Caroline II, making her rock in the deep waters ever so slightly.

Behind me, I heard a very long and exasperated sigh escape Destin. Ever since Tessia had been transferred to Breaker’s motor yacht, Destin had been in… a mood. He had tried everything in his power to get her back, but the White Coats refused, even his threats.

There was also the faint sound of chatting between Destin and his sister over a comm that she’d taken from Breaker, and I could tell by Destin’s annoyed tone that Breaker was probably hitting on Tessia again, and not the way that would make her feel flattered.

I breathed in the clean, salty air; the chilled winds and the sound of rushing water reminded me of home. Zaccoth, the Cayser System’s farthest planet from our sun, was a stunning world of ice and snow. To me, it seemed like a very sleek design of blues and whites, and the darkness of our oceans and seas. I had grown up playing under those waters with my little brother and his friends. I couldn’t really say that I missed them, though. In some strange way, it was nice being so far away, like it was a world only I knew about, despite the fact that I had met Destin, Tessia, and Zephyr.

“Hey,” Zephyr’s voice said behind me. Startled, I jumped.

“Must you be so silent?” I said, putting a hand to my chest as if that would calm my surprised heart.

“Sorry.” She came up next to me and crossed her forearms on top of the railing on the Caroline II. Out of the corner of my vision, I eyed Siren, warily. She was sleeping around Zephyr’s shoulders, but after what happened a few days ago, I wasn’t too sure.

I exhaled, running a hand through my hair.

“What are you thinking about?” Zephyr asked, not turning her head to look at me. I noticed she had taken out the braid Tessia had put in earlier and had changed the style back to her normal high ponytail. Her dark hair whipped in the winds.

“I’m… thinking about home.”

Zephyr nodded. “Zaccoth.” She paused. “Do you miss your family?”

I scoffed. “Can’t fully say that I do. It’s nice being away for once, even if it means being trapped in Area 51.”

She tilted her head in my direction, her oceanic eyes studying my face. She turned around, resting her elbows on the top rung, her upper back leaning against the railing. “Are you an only child?” she asked.

I shook my head. “A younger brother. But he’s… a character, to say the least.”

Zephyr smiled. “Does this character have a name?”

“Aspen,” I said.

“Aspen,” she repeated. “That’s a nice name.”

I grumbled. “Yeah, more like Ass-Pain.” I paused for a moment before continuing a new train of thought. “You know, it’s strange. I know all about your family because you’re the daughter of Admiral Halden.
